Canada’s parent and grandparent sponsorship program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor a parent or grandparent, as long as they are able to demonstrate that they can financially support their family as per the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) . They must also financially support their sponsored family members, if needed. Sponsors, unable to permanently support their parent or grandparent, may be go through the route of a Super Visa which is a long-term, multiple-entry visa for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
There are certain requirements for both sponsors and parents/grandparents
Requirements for Sponsor
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Physically reside in Canada
- Meet minimum necessary income level for three consecutive years
- Sign a sponsorship agreement to provide financial support for sponsored relative for a period of 20 years
You may not be eligible to sponsor parent or grandparent if you
- Received government financial assistance for reasons other than a disability
- Have declared bankruptcy
- Failed to provide the financial support to previously sponsored relatives
- Were convicted of a serious crime
- Are currently in prison
